HP exiting media center market
March 27th, 2007 by Kevin
It looks like my overview of HP’s z565 Digital Entertainment Center was just in time. HP has announced that they will no longer be focusing on their Digital Entertainment Center line of products. From CEPro:
The company instead will focus its energy on MediaSmart, the new brand of TVs with digital media adapters built in — not Microsoft Media Center Extenders that link Media Centers with remote TVs, but HP’s own solution for distributing photos, music, video and other content (including Web-based) to the TV.
This seems like an odd decision for HP and is definitely a blow to Microsoft’s desire to wrestle control of the living room away from cable boxes. Vista is finally an OS robust enough to deliver a great experience as a media center. My guess is that you will still be able to buy a HP computer with a Digital Cable Tuner but it just won’t be as sleek as the z565.

[...] With the announcement of HP that they will no longer be focusing on their line of Digital Entertainment Centers, I have been looking for media center computers that might look like they belong in a living room. Sony has a couple of interesting media centers that are scheduled to be released this month, the VAIO VGX-XL3 and VGX-TP1. The VGX-TP1 looks like a round version of the Mac Mini. From the Sony website: [...]
[...] This is great news in light of the recent stories of HP abandoning the media center market. I thought the decision was an odd one for HP and I opined at the time that you would still be able to buy DCTs through HP, who had always been in aleader in the media center market. Hopefully DCTs will become ubiquitous in the computer world with every manufacturer offering them.
