I don't think OCAP or CableCARD 2.0 have anything to do with OEMs not jumping on CableCARD. The fear of them being obsolete in a market where the overall product, their PCs, are obsolete once they put it them together doesn't sound right to me. The PC business is about obsolescence, that's why they are still in business.

I guess I am just trying to figure out why Dell has not released a media center pc with CableCard when they obviously have a the XPS 410 working for the most part. Also, I write a blog about media center/ DVR stuff (I try anyway), and I have no desire to buy a media center with a DCT right now. Strange, huh? Sure it is expensive, but I am also not sure if it is going to be what I want once Cox starts rolling out SDV. DCTs just seem like a short term fix.

Richard...you might be right but IPTV has a long way to go for the mass market. It is too bad firewire was just not implemented.

I don't think the lack of CableCARD media center PCs is a bad thing. CableCARD is a kludge that will likely die before being widely implemented. IPTV and internet video will(is) blow(ing) by it. This benefits consumers who will not be able to waste money on yet another dead-end expensive tech toy.

A funny thing happened on the way to CableCARD 2.0... CableCARD 1.0 basically provides a means of authorization ("seperable security"), while the M-Card allows for multiple streams (dual tuning with just one card), and the 2.0 spec morphed into an OCAP platform of sorts. SDV is a wild card and I've heard they're looking at ways to enable it in consumer electronic devices such as the TiVo Series3. We'll see what happens... and if requires the FCC stepping in.

As far as not seeing many Media Center PCs with CableCARDs - I don't think this is the problem. I think the perception (which I share) of a small market plus the large expense of providing CableCARD support are holding it back.
