I am confused. The purpose of a CableCard reader is to allow people to record high definition television. In theory, if I have a CableCard reader, I do not need a cable box. So why would I want an external CableCard reader that attaches to my computer? Let me get this straight: to replace my cable box, I need a computer and then this hideous device called an external Digital Tuner from ATI. To replace one device that sits by my television, I need two new devices. That is brilliant! I love progress.
The thing that frustrates me even more is that this external tuner is only for one CableCard, meaning you cannot watch one show and record another. If you want to do that, you need a second tuner. That is some serious clutter around my television.

There are also internal DCTs, although they also connect via USB (go figure), and I believe Vista MC supports up to 2 of them. You’re right though, these external DCTs are hideous!

If your tv doens’t have a cable card slot then you have to get a cable box, these have a monthly fee in my area at $8-12/month depending on if you have dvr etc. However, cable cards are free so with this box you have no additional monthly fees!

Cablecards usually are not free but they do cost less per month than a cable box.
