[...] I’m assuming that the CRTC is going to frame the debate in terms of how much money the industry can afford to put into developing “new talent” (read: programming), when the industry (read: Jim Shaw, Pierre Karl Peladeau, Hollywood, etc.), can’t properly realize larger profits without first taking control of the airwaves. (the airwaves that belong to the Canadian public by the by…). It’s a bullshit argument. It’s the same one that organizations such as CRIA continue to use with respect to the music industry despite the exodus of major label acts deciding to go independent. [...]

The music industry is stuck on their old business model. Props to these guys for taking a stand… when will the others follow?

[...] One notable exception to this experiment is the lack of DRM-free music at the iTunes Music Store. There is no way this is an oversight. Universal has been looking to get out of their current contract with Apple and get more favorable terms, like a portion of iPod sales. Universal is definitely trying to get their point across to Steve Jobs. I think the music industry is beginning to realize that they only way to tame the iTunes juggernaut is to offer DRM-free music at lots of music e-tailers. DRM-free music is gaining momentum. With the success of Emusic and the Barenaked Ladies, this should come as no surprise. Hopefully the bitrates will begin to increase as well. Share and Enjoy:These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. [...]

[...] This past year, I have purchased over 30 full albums and countless individual songs online from iTunes and eMusic, all stemming from recommendations from friends via email or online where they said “Hey, listen to this song! Isn’t it great!” and sent or posted the file. That is viral marketing in action, and the music industry needs to embrace it or they may perish in this age where any savvy band can be their own PR rep, producer, mixer, concert booker (just look at the phenomenal success Prince has found since leaving a major label and marketing himself for an example of how this can be done, or groups like the Barenaked Ladies and NIN who are also embracing the new music era). If that still doesn’t convince you that viral marketing of music can be good for everyone in spite of the few bad apples that haven’t bought music on or offline and wouldn’t anyway even without file sharing, maybe something else will.
[...] A Canadian music company, Puretracks, is making the move to eliminate DRM from some of their music. Full story. For most of us, this is a major step in allowing consumers to use our music however we wish. The BareNaked Ladies have been long advocating this move. After spending countless hours trying to figure out how to get itunes music/books in other formats, this will help. Steve Jobs, who thinks teachers’ unions are too restrictive might want to rethink his view on DRM.
[...] Just for the sake of another random topic change for the New Year, I am really enjoying the fact that artists like the Barenaked Ladies are offering their albums for purchase electronically via download. Old news, yes. What’s the big deal you say? Well the difference is that they don’t have the extra annoying digital rights management (DRM) protection that iTunes and all the other major labels put on their music files! It means I can make as many copies of the file as I want and I can put it on to a cd with other music without dealing with the obstacles that DRM sets up to merely hinder people who don’t want to deal with additional barriers in technology. Greatest thing is that all the money goes towards the artist so you know you’re not paying a big corporation to just sit there and collect.
